Lower target for DiGi, Axiata and Maxis; effects of competition and GST

PETALING JAYA: The earnings of telecommunications service providers are expected to remain under pressure in the coming quarters, as competition intensifies and the effects of the recent implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) in Malaysia kick in, says CIMB Research.

“We see the risk of a bigger slowdown in the second and third quarter of 2015 due to more intense competition and the negative impact from the initial implementation of GST,” CIMB Research said in its wrap-up report on the first-quarter earnings of the telecoms sector.
