KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) will develop a 50MW large-scale solar photovoltaic plant in Selangor.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the utility company said it had received letter of acceptance of offer from the Energy Commission (EC) dated Dec 15 for the project in Tanjung Duabelas, a subdistrict of Kuala Langat, after a competitive bid process conducted by the EC.

TNB said it received EC’s consent to disclose this on Wednesday.

The letter of acceptance of offer requires TNB to satisfy certain obligations, including completion of negotiations and execution of project documents prior to EC issuing the formal letter of award for the project.

TNB did not reveal the cost of the plant or the construction timeframe.

It was reported last year that the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry had set a target of 250MW solar power production a year through a 200MW station in Peninsular Malaysia and a 50MW station in Sabah.

Last month TNB signed three power purchase agreements with a consortium comprising three companies for the supply of 150MW of solar power. Prior to that, the biggest award for a solar power plant was in April 2014 to Edra Global Energy Bhd -- a 50MW plant to be sited in Kulim, Kedah.
