Musings
GE13: A very Malaysian result
We gave every party just enough; not enough to make anybody ecstatic but enough that they can console themselves that they did partly well.
GE13: Women still running behind
The overall number of women candidates have increased, but as a percentage of the total number of candidates, they still make up only about 10% of those in the running.
Improving education
There are still many problems in our education system yet the reforms needed are moving at a glacial pace, compared with the world our children will grow up in.
It’s war – mostly online
We should be grateful that the war of words doesn’t actually spill blood because otherwise the cyber sphere would be strewn with dead bodies by now. Still, there must be a lot of wounded.
My shopping list
Though nobody has officially announced the date of the general election, an official announcement now seems redundant as some have already been campaigning for about two years.
It’s possible to be a builder of bridges
For so long we have managed to live together quite happily, regardless of race or religious differences.
Stop prejudice and stereotyping
HAVING been brought up always to be polite, I can be quite shocked when people are rude and direct.
Time we learn bridge building
In the past when mutual suspicion and mistrust increased between Malaysians of different faiths, very little has been done to build the bridge of trust and friendship we badly need.
Stop violence against women
Rape and violence against women in general has nothing to do with sex or lust, but about power.
Reflecting on the busy year that was
One can never stop learning, and to grow, we need to cast aside our preconceptions and prejudices first so that our minds can be free to accept new knowledge.
Treat every victim equally
WE should all, regardless of religion, protest at every act of aggression towards anyone because only then can we have any credibility.
‘Being different’ can make you fair game
Our schools are no longer a safe space for our children because adults have decreed that certain children may be subject to discrimination.
Not slogans but action
Both sides seem to campaign on the premise that voting for the other side means a dubious future. But what I would really like to know is how voting for any side would lead to a bright future.
Women’s rights not there yet
Malaysian women’s groups have fought hard over the years and won some battles. But does this mean women are now truly equal to men in the country?
Confused over right to choose
We have a far from perfect democracy but then there are no perfect ones anywhere.
The US democratic process
AS former US President Bill Clinton said, “democracy is not a bloodsport”. Nor are we, the voters, merely convenient pawns in a power struggle.
The fuzzy side of human perception
We often like to believe what we want to believe, often because the real facts challenge us too much. It is far easier to wallow in our prejudices than to seek out the truth in anything.
Being best in the world does not cost the earth
Greater success in competition lies in competing with your betters, and for your country.
