Affordable laptops

Undergraduates need no longer fret about the lack of computers on campus.

Beginning July 1, full-time university students can choose from seven types of laptops (from HP, BenQ, or NEC), which comes with either a personal digital assistant (PDA), printer/scanner/copier, mobile phone or digital camera.

A joint effort by Bumiputera-Commerce Bank Bhd (BCB) and ECM Consulting Sdn Bhd, the SiswaCare programme makes computer technology more accessible to students in local public universities.

“We want to make owning laptops as affordable as possible. With this programme, students save 10% to 20% compared to the retail price,” said BCB vice-president (consumer loan retail product and marketing) Anuar Amin Ayob at the signing ceremony.

“I believe this is one of the best offers, there is no other programme like this in the market currently,” he said.

Under the programme, students can select one of the eight packages which is priced at RM5,000 each with options of repayment ranging from three to five-years with a low interest rate.

Themed One Student One Computer, students who are currently receiving loans from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) are eligible to apply.

The programme is available in six universities – Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as there are BCB branches within the campuses.

All laptops are powered by Intel microprocessors and come with Sun Microsystem StarOffice, which features word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database capabilities.

Also, the laptops are wi-fi enabled so that students can make full use of the wireless networking facilities in their campuses.

Students can download application forms from the Internet and hand it in at BCB branches in their universities.
