New heights for Universiti Malaysia Pahang
By ROSLINA MOHAMAD
UNIVERSITI Malaysia Pahang (UMP) will be introducing three new faculties that will boost its standing as a competency-based technical university specialising in engineering and technology. The new faculties — marine engineering, creative technology and building engineering — will offer eight bachelor programmes. UMP now has seven faculties offering 17 programmes.
According to its deputy vice-chancellor (academic and international), Prof Dr Sabarudin Mohd, this development is in line with UMP’s target of having between 7,000 and 8,000 students by 2010.
“We hope to get approval for the three new faculties before the intake in July next year,” he said, at a handing-over-of-duties ceremony between former vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Mohamed Said Mat Lela and his successor, Datuk Dr Daing Nasir Ibrahim, recently.

Marine engineering will be offered at UMP’s permanent campus in Kuala Pahang, Pekan, where many marine-related activities are being developed.
“Creative technology will also create synergy with other programmes. Building engineering is increasingly important as the country is developing and infrastructure is needed,” Dr Sabarudin added.
Two engineering faculties — electrical and electronic, as well as mechanical engineering — will be moved to the Kuala Pahang campus next year once facilities there are in place.
Dr Daing Nasir, when asked about his mission as the new vice-chancellor, said that he would focus on implementing the strategic plan for 2008 to 2010 set up by his predecessor, and strengthening human resources.
