Hail to the chefs
KDU College’s Culinary Arts students brought glory to their alma mater when they clinched first place in the recent 3rd Penang Chefs Challenge.
The winning team, “Pride & Honour”, comprised Eugene See and Leng Yik Siang, who are Higher Diploma in European Culinary Management students, and Diploma in Culinary Arts students Christopher Yee and Wong Wai Lip.
The state government-endorsed event attracted 28 professional and 13 student teams, including participants from Germany, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea.

The competition followed the Iron Chef format, making it even more challenging, as ingredients for the cook-off remained a mystery and were only revealed right before each round.
Another surprise element, in the form of herbs and spices, was incorporated to test the creativity of the participants.
This year, the organisers included surprise elements such as mint, dried osmanthus, jasmine, nutmeg and cincalok in the qualifying and final rounds.
The teams had to prepare a four-course set menu, which should include appetizer/salad, soup, main course and dessert, for four diners within 90 minutes.
It required the chefs to display their culinary skills in butchery, preparation, cooking technique and presentation, and as the dishes were not planned prior to the competition, quick-thinking and creativity were also imperative.
KDU Petaling Jaya students did the college proud by winning the top spot.
The win was especially memorable as this is the first time students from that campus had taken part.
