Fresh faces

IT was a busy weekend at Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (Unitar) when 1,281 students from across Malaysia gathered at the university’s Pintar Campus in Kelana Jaya, Selangor, to register for the new intake last month.

The freshies, enrolled in various academic programmes, attended briefing sessions held over three days. They were given an overview of various aspects of varsity life, including the management of academic programmes, the university’s online instructional support system, tutorials, web-mail and the e-library.

Senior students also briefed the newcomers on various activities organised by the clubs on campus.

In his welcome speech, Unitar president and vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Zabid Abdul Rashid urged the new students to develop skills and competencies while pursuing their studies.

He also announced that Unitar would be introducing a dual mode of study — the conventional mode as well as the distance learning mode.

“This development is inevitable and in line with changes currently taking place in the higher education scenario in the country,” said Prof Zabid.

To achieve their goals, students should be disciplined and participate actively in cocurricular activities in the university; they must also have the right attitude and aptitude, he added.

“Success is not only measured by knowledge gained as this knowledge has to be infused with good moral values,” said Prof Zabid, at the pledge-taking ceremony held at the end of the orientation programme.

The new semester will also see two new programmes offered by the Bank Rakyat School of Entrepreneurship, which operates at the university’s newly-opened Tun Razak City Campus in Kuala Lumpur — the Bachelor of Business Management (Entrepreneurship) and Master of Business Administration (Entrepreneurship).

Unitar also recently welcomed a batch of postgraduate students from countries like Sudan, Libya and Kazakhstan.

Another first for the varsity is its diploma in Early Childhood Education offered by the university’s Education and Social Sciences faculty.
