Time to excel
They say time waits for no man and that it pays to spend your time wisely.
Chan Pui Ping could not agree more, saying that it was learning to manage her time well that helped her as a Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) student last year.
“It was a balancing act between the academic, co-curriculum and personal aspects of my life. I found that distributing my time evenly and prioritising between the three was helpful,” said Pui Ping.
Effective time management has proved consequential for the 20-year-old student from SMK Aminuddin Baki, Kuala Lumpur, as she earned 4As in her exams and is a recipient of an excellence award under the Yayasan Pendidikan Titiwangsa.
Pui Ping is one of the 12 students who received an excellence award under the STPM category by the foundation that also awards students at Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah, Penilaian Menengah Rendah and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia levels.
Fellow straight-A STPM student and award recipient Ng Kar Min of SMK Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur, shared his sentiment.
“It was actually one of the hardest things to do, but I found that making lists and creating schedules helped.
“I think what’s important is to find what is the most productive time to study and then to work your day around that,” he said, adding that he would like to study computer science.
Patricia Ann Isli agreed, saying that it is important for students to remember to sleep and eat properly.
“I know it’s hard because I struggled at times to put my books down but I think it is important to have a day set aside, perhaps during the weekend, to rest so that your mind and body can recharge,” said the SMK Desa Tun Hussein Onn, Kuala Lumpur, student.
This year, a total of 806 awards were given out in a ceremony that was attended by Education director-general Tan Sri Abd Ghafar Mahmud. The foundation, which has 45 schools in the Titiwangsa area under its programme, has been awarding students for their excellence since 2005. — By LUWITA HANA RANDHAWA
