Inspiring icon
YOU have to believe in yourself before you move on and try new challenges as this is a wonderful gift from God — this is how Gertrude Jock, my favourite English teacher inspired me.
Miss Gertrude as she was called in school taught me English for two years.
I remember vividly how as a new student, I caught her eye on the day I enrolled at SM St Joseph in Sabah. She was a beautiful lady and was immaculately dressed. Knowing that I ws jittery and nervous, she flashed me a smile and approached me.
Miss Gertrude immediately put me at ease and said that I had to start a new beginning and a new chapter of my schooling life in Sabah.
In the two years that she taught me, she encouraged me to put in effort in my studies and give my best in everything I did.
She had a way with words that inspired me all the time.
When I moved back to my hometown in Malacca, Miss Gertrude gave me a small card which had my name written on it and with the words:
You have been wonderful and superb.
The light of Your Future is in the Palm of Your Hands.
Soar Away to a Greater Future.
Thank you!”
I was so touched. I would like to thank her again for giving me the confidence and believing in me.
Even though she doesn’t teach me anymore, she is my best English teacher, and she will always be. Thank you Miss Gertrude!
