A simple purchase
By ERIC CHRISTEN
DEATH walks into a bicycle shop and finds Santa Claus behind the counter.
“I WANT TO BUY SICKLE,” he says.
“Really?” answers Santa Claus, “what kind?”
“SHARP ONE.”
“Well, let me see now, I have many different kinds. Where do you expect to use it?” says Santa, knitting his eyebrows together. Death’s expression doesn’t change. “In the mountains, in the park, on the road – ”
“EVERYWHERE!” interrupts Death.
“Oooohkeeeey. Any specific brand? There is Specialised and Bianci and then I have Ghost, Giant and even Canondale.” He steps round the counter to point at these bikes. “All are fully equipped with Shimano gears and breaks and every seat is gel ...”
“I DON’T WANT WHEELS!” Death exclaims.
“But this is a bicycle shop. That’s what it says outside.”
Expressionless, Death walks outside and studies the signboard for some time.
He returns and addresses Santa. “SO YOU DON’T SELL SICKLES?”
Santa parts his hands in a gesture of apology.
“Only BI-Cycles in fact,” concludes the jolly old man.
“I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THE SEXUALITY OF MY SICKLES,” states Death, pointing a bony finger at Santa accusingly. He shrugs as if to say “what is the world coming to” and walks out of the shop.
“Oh, well,” thinks Santa, watching him go, “we never could understand each other.”
