Word order
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY FADZILAH AMIN
COULD you please tell me if the following sentence is grammatically correct:
“This is the *Company Name* *business* on *Road Name*”.
For example, “This is the Guardian Pharmacy on Fifth Street”.
Or “This is the McDonald’s restaurant on Ivy Road.” – Yong
Both your sentences are grammatically correct if you are using US English, and there is more than one Guardian Pharmacy and McDonald’s restaurant in the town or city you are speaking from.
British English usually uses the preposition “in” before a street or road or a street or road name, as can be seen in one of the sentences used to illustrate the meaning of “street” in the online Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary:
“Diane’s house is UK in/US on Cherrywood Street.”
(dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/street?q=street)
The article “the” is not needed if there is only one Guardian Pharmacy or McDonald’s restaurant in the town or city. When you say “This is the McDonald’s restaurant in Ivy Road.”, you are trying to distinguish it from other McDonald’s restaurants there, e.g. those in “Casuarina Street” and “Bell Road”. But when you say “This is McDonald’s restaurant in Ivy Road.”, you are just giving the name and location of the restaurant.
COMPARING with the past
Could you please explain the following sentences:
1. She liked you better than she likes me.
2. He then saw me oftener than he sees me now.
3. She thinks that he is there.
4. She thinks that he was there.
5. She thinks that he will be there.
6. She will think that he is there.
7. She will think that he was there.
8. She will think that he is there. – Yu Siong
1. “She liked you better than she likes me.” means that she liked you in the past more than she likes me now.
2. “He then saw me oftener than he sees me now.” means that during a period in the past he spent time with (or visited) me more often than he does now.
3. “She thinks that he is there.” means that at the present time, she thinks that he is there now.
4. “She thinks that he was there.” means that at the present time, she thinks that he was there at some time in the past.
5. “She thinks that he will be there.” means that at the present time, she thinks that he will be there at some time in the future.
6. “She will think that he is there.” means that at some time in the future she will think that he is there also at the same time in the future. For example, on Jan 1, 2012, she will think that he is there on Jan 1, 2012.
7. “She will think that he was there.” means that at some time in the future she will think that he will have been there some time before. For example, on Jan 1, 2012, she will think that he will have been there on Dec 22, 2011.
“Will have been there” is in the future perfect tense used in English “to talk about a past event from the perspective of the future”
8. This sentence is the same as Sentence 6.
