Mind your business

WORDWISE
By S.H. LOKE

THERE are some people we would like to shun because they like to impose their beliefs or opinions on you. Some even like to control your actions or tell you what to do. Here are some words to describe such people who cannot mind their own business, and always get involved in affairs which do not concern them.

1. Officious

Too eager to tell people what to do:

You can always meet officious people who want to teach you how to do things their way.

2. Overbearing

Always trying to control other people without considering their wishes or feelings:

Some elderly women can be quite overbearing as they like to interfere in people’s lives.

3. Domineering

A domineering person tries to control other people without considering what they feel or what they want:

Mr Lee is quite timid and quiet because he has a domineering wife.

4. Dictatorial

Telling people what to do in an unreasonable way:

Nobody likes to work with Jack as he is arrogant and dictatorial.

5. Obtrusive

Being noticeable in a way that is unpleasant:

Her loud voice and coarse jesting make her obtrusive.

6. Pushy

Determined to succeed and get what you want to the extent of behaving rudely:

Some salesmen can be quite pushy when they want to sell their products.

7. Tyrannical

Behaving in a cruel and unfair way towards someone you have power over:

Lucy moved out because she could not stand her tyrannical father who wanted her to marry a rich man.

8. Meddlesome

To deliberately get involved in a situation that does not concern you in an annoying way:

She is a meddlesome woman who likes to matchmake her friends.
