Residents’ rep says area is crime-prone
KOTA KINABALU: The abduction and assault of a Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student have heightened fears among residents of the Kingfisher Park housing area in the city.
In recent years, the neighbourhood, which is near the UMS campus, state Legislative Assembly and federal department complex, have been beset by snatch thefts and burglaries, among other crimes.
“This latest incident is really worrying and I don’t know how safe the area is for our children,” Kingfisher Park residents committee chairman S.M. Muthu said yesterday.
He said what was most worrying was that the abduction occurred in broad daylight, at 5.40pm, and in a public area.
“The perpetrators must have been confident that they could get away with it,” Muthu said, adding that there had been cases of snatch thieves using cars to make their getaway.
He said Kingfisher Park residents had been asking the police to establish a beat station in the area for several years.
“We can only hope that security measures in this area will be intensified and that this incident is an isolated case,” Muthu added.
