Driving Distance
OFF the tee box, driving distance is the average number of yards. Two drives are measured per round on holes chosen to counteract the effect of gradient and wind.
I USE quite an old Ping Rapture driver that I picked up off their Tour truck about five/six years ago. It was actually made for Angel Cabrera. They made him a seven and a 9-degree version, but he only took the seven.
This is a model that some people have managed to crack the head on over the years, but that’s not happened to me fortunately. It has composite in the design so feels a little softer than other titanium.
The sound is different as well. The first thing I go for is looks, then sound. I’ve kept the same shaft in it that Cabrera wanted which is obviously very stiff. I’m contract-free at the moment, which means I have Callaway irons and Titleist wedges – I guess I like to please everybody!
I’ve never been on any machines to analyse my hip or shoulder turn, but I did play lots of field hockey as a youngster and probably could have played in Division One of the Belgian League if I’d kept going.
I think that developed the muscles needed for speed in the swing. I have fast hands and I’m pretty flexible.
