Many of the cosplay devotees came dressed for the occasion.
A WEEK ago, Multimedia University’s Malacca campus was the scene of the first anime event outside Kuala Lumpur.

The GACC (Games Anime Comic Circle), organised by the anime club on campus EMiNA (Exploring Magic in Anime) at the main hall on March 18, saw an encouraging turnout which included attendees from KL and Johor. Many came dressed in costumes a la their favourite characters.

After the opening by the university’s assistant director of student affairs and sports division (Malacca campus), Syukor Hashim, the event kicked off with a host of activities, among which the cosplay and the character design competitions drew the most attention, as in any anime convention.

The cosplay contest generated the most noise thanks to cheers and laughter from the crowd.

The top three winners for the individual category were Anna Liza Mazli, who did Haruko from FLCL, Michelle Yoong (Jam from Guilty Gear) and Mohd Amran Mohd Aminuddin (Dr Strangelove from the Strangelove series), respectively.

The group category had only one entry: Timcanpi, a D-Grayman group, who won by default. Nevertheless, it didn’t stop this lone entry from working the crowd up with their skit.

Meanwhile, the art competition proceeded at a quieter note. The requirement was simple: design an original character for Final Fantasy XIII. Sek Mei Kuan clinched the top prize of a WACOM Grapire 3 drawing tablet.

Participants also got to shop for merchandise such as anime DVDs and VCDs. Other activities included the Wizards of the Coast-sanctioned Magic: The Gathering trading card game contest.

There were inevitable glitches involving logistics and event schedules but generally, most had fun at the gathering.

Many also felt that for a first effort outside KL, it was good.

Bleach licensed

LAST week, anime fans were abuzz when it was announced that the popular Bleach anime was licensed to Viz Media. Fans around the world have expected this as Viz has already been publishing the Bleach manga since 2004. Viz is named Master Licensor (or worldwide licensee) by TV Tokyo Corp for the Bleach anime and its related merchandise, which includes home videos and television broadcasts.

New Ghost movie

POPULAR futuristic anime series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, will have a new full-length movie version called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Solid State Society.

The good news is that the same production team from the TV series will be behind the big-screen venture.

Tentatively, the movie will run 100 minutes. It will be set in 2034, two years after the refugee riot that took place in the TV series.

Sowing the Appleseed

MASAMUNE Shirow’s famous manga Appleseed will finally move into TV anime realm following two feature-length movie productions. A sequel to the latest Appleseed film is also under way. This was confirmed in an interview with Shirow in the latest Kiken-S, a manga magazine that Shirow works for.

Anime projects

KONAMI has four new anime projects in the works: Sky Girls, Tokimeki Memorial, Otogi Jushin Akazukin and Saint October. Sky Girls is reported to be a 30-minute OVA production.
