Taking it all off
By RUBIN KHOO
MEN without body hair? That may be a pretty freaky thought but apparently men today are okay with the idea of removing more than just the hair on their backs.
Brazilian waxing – total hair removal from your nether regions (ouch!) – it seems, is no longer just for the girls.
|
At Strip KL, the waxing therapists can carry out treatments, including Brazilian waxing, in 15 minutes flat. |
“About 30% of our customers are male,” says Angie Teoh of Strip KL. “And they are straight.
They usually come in with their girlfriends.”
Strip KL is a branch of Singapore’s highly successful Strip. The company, which started its operations there four years ago, specialises in waxing treatments, particularly the Brazilian.
There are now six outlets in Singapore and since it has opened its doors, Strip has performed more than 200,000 Brazilians in Singapore.
Three of their outlets are coed, which means both men and women are allowed to get their treatments done. Apparently, quite a few couples enjoy getting waxed together (not in the same room of course!) and Strip KL has followed suit, offering services to women as well as men.

The Strip KL facility’s trendy ambience gives it a stylish feel so that the outlet isn’t clinical or non-descript. |
Adding to the “fun” is the whole feel of the place. If you’re thinking a clinical, nondescript environment, think again. The outlet is stylish and the interior mixes street style with über chic.
“The idea is to make it not just about the treatments but about the ambience as well,” says Teoh.
The trendy environment also serves to take clients’ minds off the treatment.
Strip adheres to strict guidelines. The treatment is referred to as “HSQ” (hygiene, speed and quality). They use only top grade waxes made from bees wax. There’s also a guava wax to soothe sensitive areas.
All Strip therapists wear gloves and the wax is stripped off in 15 minutes.
“I was actually quite shy,” says marketing executive Mohd Malik who was brave enough to get a Boyzilian. “But after the whole process, I felt really good.
I am definitely keeping it.” “It’s not that awkward,” admits journalist John Goh who was willing to go all the way.
“But you can’t be shy.”
“I treated it like going to see the doctor. They were really very professional. You just go into cubicle, remove your clothes and they’ll give you a towel,” he expounds. “I wouldn’t mind doing it again, it’s definitely more comfortable and I am sure that most girlfriends would like it.”
But not many guys feel that way. Musician Ridzuan Johari is one of them.
He says: “The only way I would have a Boyzilian is if I had to wear a G-string and I don’t think I’ll be doing that anytime soon.
“I think it’s weird for men not to have any hair on your body,” he adds.
Well, for those with the problem of too much hair in certain areas, then waxing could be something to think about. Perhaps you have a unibrow that gives people the shivers or a hairy back or chest that draws some pretty curious stares at the gym?
Well, Strip KL offers waxing services for these areas – the back, arms, stomach and legs.
So if you don’t have the guts to go south, you can always try getting other parts of your body waxed.
