Crazy patchwork

Quaint: Have fun making and using these handbags. |
QUILTERS make patchwork projects from cloth cut into precise shapes. However, they also produce crazy patchwork pieces from cloth remnants cut into odd shapes and sewn together. The result is haphazardly exciting.
Here’s my version of crazy patchwork for a unique handbag. Have fun!

2. Your piece will now look like in the diagram. On section C, draw a line from D to E, 1.5cm from section B. Use the ballpoint pen to score the line. Cut out the shaded parts.
3. Draw lines EG and HI in the middle of flaps D and E. Score the lines.
4. Following the diagram, fold the piece into a bag. Mark two holes at 2cm apart and 1cm away from the edge on the top flap of the bag. Mark another set of holes on the front of the bag, 2cm apart and 0.6cm from the edge of the top flap.
5. Open up the bag again and lay it flat on the table. Spread PVA glue onto section A and place the A4 colour paper on it. Press to adhere the paper. Fold the lower part of the paper up and press to give it a crisp crease. (This technique gives the inside of the bag a neat finish when it is folded up later.) Repeat this for sections B and C.
6. Turn the bag over and put the outside facing up. Pierce the two sets of holes marked earlier in Step 4. Fold up the bag correctly. Attach the paper bead with a piece of thick thread to the front of the bag. Cut the rubber band so that you have a long strip. Tie a knot and thread it through a hole from the inside of the flap. Pull it up and loop it over the paper bead, and then push the end into the other hole. Adjust it to make sure the rubber band is looped tightly over the bead before you knot the end. Snip off any excess after knotting the rubber band.
7. Fold the bag into shape and glue the sides firmly.
8. Tear gift wrapping papers into pieces of about 3cm x 4cm and glue them all over the bag. Do not overlap the pieces. Just leave a small gap between each piece. Then, with a black marker, draw the outlines of every piece. Add short lines across to resemble sewing stitches.
9. Fold the border colour paper into half lengthwise and glue to the edges of the flap of the bag and on the edge of the inside. Brush a layer of varnish to the bag and bead. Pierce two holes, 4cm away from the corners of the fold on flap. Attach the black cord, as a handle.
