The golden years
With advancing age comes a list of troubling questions. But it’s not a bad thing.
FACE FORTUNE with MADAM ZORRA
From very young, we have an innate fear of what the future holds for us when we grow old. Many have written to me asking if they would be lonely, in sound health, or financially comfortable when they have crossed into the 50s.
These are not absurd questions. Aging is a fact of life, and our future is what we make of life today. How we live our lives and how we handle ourselves at this present moment will be reflected in our latter years.

In Face Feng Shui, the age of 50 and beyond is represented on the tip of the nose right down to the chin. The ancient Chinese claim that the life span of a person can be reduced from the length of the philtrum (the “valley” above the lips). This is open to debate, as many with short philtrums have lived to a ripe old age. An average philtrum should be more than one finger’s breath.
Other cultures pay great attention to the “rivers of life” – that is, the smile lines running down from the wings of the nose towards the lips.
Clear lines are said to indicate a long life, especially if they run past the lips right to the chin area. Breaks, scars and moles on these lines warn of grave illnesses, even untimely deaths.
Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, who died when the barb of a ray pierced his heart, had a mole on his right river of life. Another was Marilyn Monroe, who died from an overdose of sleeping pills. She had a mole just above her river of life.
It is not just death or illness that troubles us; we also worry about our emotional comfort and happiness. We wonder, for instance, if our children, whom we have sacrificed so much for, will be there for us in our old age. We have fears of loneliness, of divorce, of whether we would be able to fend for ourselves.
There are secret signs on the chin that hint at such a predicament.
One is a mole right in the centre of the chin and another is a small or snub chin especially if it has a mole in the centre or a cleft. Interestingly enough Angelina Jolie, who was born on June 4, 1975, had such a chin, but through her own active intervention has averted a lonely fate. Through plastic surgery, she has filled out her very prominent cleft and also lengthened her chin, giving it a softer curve.
It is common knowledge she was an outlandish girl who did not give two hoots about what people thought about her. She was so outrageous she thought nothing of kissing her brother on the lips in public (an absolute no-no even in Hollywood), which was televised globally; and her racy affair and marriage to Billy Bob Thornton after her first divorce, raised many eyebrows.
Then suddenly, during the filming of Tomb Raiders in Cambodia, her whole outlook on life began to change.
She adopted a Cambodian child, and became a Goodwill Ambassadress for UN refugees. She then hooked up with Brad Pitt, had a child, and adopted two more children from Africa and Vietnam. During this period, for some strange reason, she filled up her cleft and lengthened her snub chin to a softer, rounded shape.
This change, I’m convinced, has altered her life.
She has since found emotional harmony, and it will give her stability, especially in old age. There will be fewer confrontations in her life, and she will become more caring and gentle. She will be more involved in humanitarian issues and less self-absorbed. She will be surrounded by love throughout her life because she has opened her heart with love.
If you are worried about how your life will turn out when you age, you should have a good heart-to-heart talk with yourself. Should some sign on your face trouble you or if your inner consciousness nags you, do not ignore it. Face it and look for solutions.
Sometimes all that is required is a conscious effort to change your attitude or lifestyle, or perhaps to pay attention to your body and its needs. Or, like Angelina Jolie, you may want go remove a mole or change your appearance to reflect the change within.
Remember, your fate is in your hands. Take charge of your life right now because only you can ensure that your golden years are happy and fulfilled.
