Bearing with grinding noise

Turbo Blues: By DADDY FIXIT

There is a soft grinding noise from the gearbox of my 1980 Fiat 132 when the engine is idling with the gearbox in neutral gear. The noise is more pronounced when my foot is taken off the clutch pedal.

I am worried that this may be a gearbox problem, as spares are no longer available for this model of vehicle. Kindly advise.

THE noise comes from either the clutch release bearing or the gearbox itself.

If it’s the clutch, replacing the bearing should eliminate the noise, and I would encourage replacing all three clutch components at the same time – bearing, pressure plate and friction plate.

If the noise comes from the gearbox, this is usually caused by free-play in the layshaft bearings. This is a common problem in some vehicles and is usually no cause for alarm. The gearbox is capable of performing for many more kilometres without causing any problems.

Switching to synthetic lubricants may help.
