The man who had ‘a midsummer night’s dream’
THE nearest candidate to what can be described as “creative director” at Van Cleef & Arpels is Nicolas Bos.
This straggly 35-year-old genius wears so many hats it’s a wonder his head has not gotten swollen. Grins the affable talent, “My card says ‘International Marketing Director’ but I look after jewellery creation, production, strategies, development of new collections, commerce and price fixing.”

A creative team of 30 toil under him. Like his boss Stanislas De Quercize, Bos was plucked from Cartier, having worked at Cartier Foundation in Paris before joining VCA seven years ago.
“This is a human sized company with only 500 people. I look after three teams in charge of creation, lapidary and marketing.
“Our DNA consists of three aspects; Nature, Culture and Imagination.
“Nature would be flowers, butterflies and botanicals. Culture is inspired by great civilisations like China or ancient Egypt. Imagination, of course, is about fairy tales, enchanted worlds and fantastical beings. ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ falls under this genre as VCA has always made fairy brooches with the face composed of a faceted diamond so this collection is an extension of what we have been doing all our life.”
It was one hot summer’s night last year when Bos and his boss got down together and dreamed up this theme for ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’!
