Bursting into song
Cinema viewers get some karaoke action when Through My Window was played before the movie.
SITTING in the darkened cinema, 22-year-old Ho Mun Ling and her college mate S. Sivanathan were waiting for the much-anticipated 2012 movie to commence.
“I was just starting to munch my popcorn when a karaoke video began playing on the screen,” said Ho.
Sing-along: Moviegoers got up to sing and dance when the song Through My Window came on before the movie started. Fellow movie fan, Ismail Manan, added: “I knew right away it was Through My Window!”
Ismail said he joined in the sing-along because “the karaoke buffs next to me started it first!”
He said the lyrics of the song were shown with the video “but since I’ve been hearing it for so many weeks, I knew the song by heart.”
Through My Window was first heard over the airwaves a few weeks ago when an anonymous CD arrived at radio stations.
This mystery created an immediate buzz and people wondered who the artistes were behind the song.
Virginia Kennedy, an Australian film director, was walking into the cinema when the karaoke video started playing.
“I don’t know the song but it was so catchy, I started dancing up and down the aisle!”
She was joined by other cinemagoers, who got off their seats to sing and dance to the song.
“It was so much fun!” said an enthusiastic group of teenagers.
Photos and videos of the sing-along have been uploaded on the website everyoneconnects.net. The website also hints that this is only a small part of its social movement.
Its bigger aim is to get everyone in Malaysia to be part of a video that will feature Malaysians from all walks of life singing to the song in Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur – the venue of the Everyone Connects event on Nov 21.
Those who have collaborated on this project so far – and those who want to be part of it – will be there, to be part of what is said to be the event of the year.
Since its appearance, Through My Window, with its catchy, upbeat tune has got everyone singing and humming along.
A check on YouTube showed that several videos of the karaoke sing-along in the cinema have been posted on the video sharing website, while the hype continues in social networking websites like Facebook and Friendster. Bunkface has been identified as the band behind the song but even the band members say that they are just one of many collaborators in this social movement. – everyoneconnects.net
