European luxury

By CHIN MUI YOON

High-end furniture provider Chesters Collections unveil their latest desirable sofas, chairs and tables.

NOTHING but the highest quality furniture sourced directly from top European brands will do for its Kuala Lumpur customers, insists James Edison, director of J&J Chesters Malaysia, the high-end furniture company that sells only luxury European brands.

“We stress that every piece of furniture sold is manufactured in the country of origin,” he says. “There are no third parties involved in making our furniture, as they come with guarantees of having been designed and made in their home countries.”

Homeowners desiring luxury and high-quality furniture know they have come to the right place at Chesters Collection, as the company specialises in fine European furniture brands that are marketed even by the guru of design, British designer Sir Terence Conran.

Chesters Collection recently unveiled its newest ranges of fine furniture, some that were recently showcased in January at the eminent platform for furniture, the Cologne International Fair in Germany.

Here’s a quick look at the four collections exclusively sold at Chesters Collection.

Desirable De Sede

Swiss brand De Sede is regularly found in the homes of the rich and famous, from Hollywood film stars to the heads of multimillion-dollar corporations.

Established for 40 years, the brand is famous for its fine craftsmanship in exquisite handmade leather sofas, armchairs, beds and tables. De Sede is well-known for the quality of leather used and that each item is still painstakingly handmade by a skilled craftsman, not a machine.

Leather for De Sede furniture is taken only from bulls that are less than two years old from Switzerland, southern Germany and Scandinavia. Each piece is chemical-free, as vegetable dye is used. Robust, beautiful and sensual to touch, each sofa, with its finely nuanced pattern and natural patina, is too beautiful to sit on!

Smart W. Schillig

Leading German furniture manufacturer W. Schillig is already well known in Malaysia thanks to Chesters Collection.

W. Schillig, established in Germany since 1946 as a basketry company, is today among Europe’s largest furniture manufacturers.

W. Schillig’s model 20450 Fuzion sofa is as comfortable as it is stylish.

Edison emphasises that the brand is remarkably flexible and offers customers a wide choice of customisation and mix-and-match. Over 20 types of fashionable fabric as well as fine leather are offered in its new collection. The latest Wagner Alumedic Limited S, just launched at the Cologne Fair in Germany this year, is now available in Kuala Lumpur.

Fashionable Fasem

You can always trust the Italians to be fashionable, even in their furniture! This über-cool designer brand is known for its fundamental characteristic which is its use of modern engineering combined with the old art of leather treatment.

Fasem’s bentwood, leather rocking chaise longue is designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in collaboration with Anna Maria Niemeyer.

The company was founded in 1976 in Tuscany, Italy, as an artisanal workshop skilled in manufacturing seats in hide leather. Its company name is actually an acronym of Factory Seats Metal. Its home region is famed for its beautiful landscape and proud heritage of craftsmanship in many areas.

For Fasem, hide leather remains the heart of its furniture collection. It uses full grain hide leather tanned with vegetable extracts in tan vats to maintain a homogenous colouring and tonality.

Fasem furniture masterfully blends leather with tempered glass to add a touch of transparency and lightness, polished or painted die-cast aluminium, and polycarbonate to produce a stylish range of collectible pieces sought after by home aficionados.

Edison points out that the brand also custom designs larger 12-, 14- or 16-seater sofas that are difficult to find.

Stylish Swiss-made lamps

Baltensweiler studio, located in Ebikon, on the boundary of Lucerne in Switzerland, is known for producing stylish lamps in series of between 100 and 1,000 units. They are sold through specialist retailers in Switzerland and abroad.

Heritage is a matter of pride where repair services are offered even for its oldest models dating from when the studio was established in 1951.

Contemporary Reinhardt

The latest addition to Chesters is the Reinhard collection of contemporary office furniture. Now managed by the fourth generation, this family-owned brand started as a humble wagon-maker in 1900. Today, the brand is known for its creative and practical collections for every workplace.

Every piece sold comes with Swiss quality certification as well as certification from the Forest Stewardship Council which guarantees that the wood used is from environmentally friendly sources.

Chesters Collection’s showroom is at B-0-8 Megan Avenue 1, No. 189, Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. Tel: 03-2166 8330.
