Virtual make-over
By PATSY KAM
Customise your own make-up virtually.
DON’T you just wish you could try out some of the colours you see at the beauty counters before buying? Sometimes, the effect can look totally different from what you expect when you actually apply the products on your eyes, cheeks and lips.
To help you decide, Mary Kay has come up with an ingenious solution. Launched last January, the Mary Kay Virtual Makeover has made it possible for women to find their perfect look with a simple click of a button.
The fun, no-hassle online tool enables you to experiment with new colours and customise your own make-up. The beauty of this interactive site is that it’s completely “risk-free” – go on a colour trial without the hassle of removal and reapplication, or the worry of germs from testers or shared applicators. You don’t have to pay for the products and anyone can log on to the page for free.
Helpful and fun: The Mary Kay virtual makeover website. Just upload your photo on to marykay.com.my/virtualmakeover.aspx and follow the instructions on the website. You’re advised to insert a “clean” picture, meaning one without any make-up (except for foundation and drawn eyebrows), and pull hair away from the face either by tying a pony-tail or wearing a hairband. Try to avoid shadows on the face and remove all accessories. For better picture quality, avoid using the phone camera.
If the size of your photo is too large, edit and crop before uploading. After the photo is uploaded, mark the dots in your pupils and orientate your picture. Adjust the size and position until the outline of the face sits properly. This will help with adjusting and fitting hairstyles.
There are hairstyle and hair colour options, including highlights, to play with. You can even rotate or flip your hair for a different parting, and adjust the length!
Then, create a look to suit your style, from everyday colour to something a little bolder. For better cosmetic tracing, you need to mark the corners of your eyes and lips, and adjust the shapes so that the colours can be filled correctly.
Each colour look that’s tried out will be shown on a filled Mary Kay Compact onscreen featuring the products selected. Then, simply click to connect with a Mary Kay independent beauty consultant to place an order.
You can even save the visual and forward it to a friend via e-mail. If you don’t like what you see, just erase and start over.
If you don’t have a picture of yourself, the Virtual Makeover also lets you select a “virtual model” to wear the latest looks created by make-up artists. Models with various skin tones, eye and hair colours are available to choose from, allowing you to select the one closest to your own features.
More than two million women from around the world have experimented and sampled colour cosmetics with their own photos.
This month, the Virtual Makeover has additional tools to help eager brides test out their looks before walking down the aisle. What makes this different from the ordinary virtual page is the bridal accessories such as bridal hairstyles, tiaras, veils, hair accessories as well as necklaces and earrings to help you get a clearer vision of that big day.
Myriad combinations are possible and if you’re lazy, there are also six stylish bridal looks created by make-up artists.
