Contrasting shades of Zara's Spring Summer designs

By WONG LI ZA

Experiment with colours and contrasts.

IF YOU think a greenish blue and purple outfit paired with chartreuse heels doesn’t sound as though it’s going to work, well, admittedly, it’s not for everyone. But you’d be amazed at the results if you are open to experiment.

In the flexible field of fashion, who is to say you can’t pair certain colours, or mix and match at liberty to create your own style?

Sleeveless red top with blue balloon skirt and matching strappy heels and heavily beaded belt.

Fair enough, what is pleasing to one’s eye may seem repulsive to another, but as long as nobody says it’s a major fashion faux pas, you’ve got the green light.

Spanish label Zara’s Spring Summer 2009 collection is all about creating such contrasts which manages to create harmony in discord.

The in thing this season are ensembles teamed with similar nude tones or pieces worn with contrasting neutral colours like grey.

To a large extent, colour coordination remains the key, and must-haves include blazers in base tones which look great worn over a shift dress. A classic rock appeal is created by leather jackets worn over harem pants or skinny trousers.

Pair a blazer with a pair of worn-look shorts or a miniskirt, throw on a pair of strappy sandals and a chain bag, and voila, you’ve got a thing going there!

The line-up also includes a unique combo in the form of a well-tailored blazer over blouse and dark leggings. Matched with studded heels and bag, the finished look is both formal and wild.

Another ensemble cleverly offers a soft, layered effect by pairing a belted jacket with ruched cuffs over a double-lapel top. Matching ruched-hem pants complete the look.

A sleeveless, red top with blue balloon skirt and heavily beaded belt hammer home the message “striking contrast”.

Pleated ‘overlapping’ bustier dress paired with wide, ankle strap heels.

Or achieve a simple yet classy look with a dark, bustier dress with shiny embellishments on the waist.

Screaming simple elegance is a purple, “overlapping” pleated bustier dress paired with matching accessories and wide, ankle strap heels.

Women seeking sporty chic may be inspired by a front-zipped jacket with embellishment over a pleated dress.

The Spring Summer 2009 collection also features a creative design characterised by a deep-coloured sleeveless dress with a draped, cascading effect from the neckline. The dress is accentuated with an accompanying patterned belt.

Summer is never complete without bright, cheery dresses paired with contrasting coloured shoes. Zara this season also includes dresses in tropical prints and flowing fabrics that come in shades of green, blue, mink and grey.

There are also fringes, bows, suede and snakeskin to dress up the feet, along with chunky or elaborate accessories.
