Tiger moments
The Year of the Tiger will start in two weeks’ time. Let’s look at some significant Tiger years and personalities.
As the Year of the Tiger draws closer, Chinese astrologists the world over are predicting a year of change, with abundant opportunities to achieve success for those willing to rise to the challenge.
Historically, the Year of the Tiger has always marked a time of improvements and changes for the better.
Take for instance, the credit card. It was invented in 1950, a Tiger year, by Frank McNamara and Ralph Schneider, founders of Diners’ Club. Today the credit card is such an integral part of daily life that we take it for granted. Think about how much easier it is nowadays to grab an ice-cold bottle of Tiger Beer with a credit card.
Thanks to these innovative pioneers, we don’t have to waste time going to a cash point to withdraw money, or worry about not having cash on hand.
Today, Tiger Beer has its very own Tiger FC credit card and Tiger FC payment card that enable owners not only to enjoy cashless transactions but offer added benefits to those who are football fans.
Actress Michelle Yeoh was born in the year of the tiger. In 1962, another Tiger year, the Beatles released My Bonnie in collaboration with The Saints, ushering in profound changes musically and culturally.
From the way album covers appeared, to penning their own songs, to innovative recording techniques, the Beatles revolutionised the music industry. The Fab Four went on to produce the most number of albums in the shortest span of years: an outstanding 13 albums in eight years.
On the home front, 1998 was the year Malaysia became the first Asian nation to host the Commonwealth Games.
The Kuala Lumpur International Airport was opened three days prior to the Games. A few months later, Malaysia opened the Putra LRT, which today, carries over 190,000 passengers every day and up to 350,000 during national events. Certainly a case of “Malaysia Boleh” in the Year of the Tiger!
Award-winning beer Not only does the Year of the Tiger mark significant events, it has been the birth year of some of the most accomplished people.
Datuk Michelle Yeoh was born in 1962, and she certainly is a tiger personality all the way. The Ipoh lass’ first love was classical ballet and, to this end, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in London. But then in 1983, she won the Miss Malaysia beauty pageant at age 21, and it marked the beginning of her rise to movie stardom.
Tom Cruise is another regal Tiger born in 1962. The future Hollywood superstar had to deliver newspapers to make ends meet when he was 12 years old.

One attribute of those born in the year of the Tiger is that they are determined and resilient, always aiming for success.
Probably no-one exemplifies this better than Marco Polo. Born in Italy in 1254, Marco Polo set off on a series of adventures when he was 17 with his father and an uncle to Asia.
Marco Polo’s observations from his extensive 24 year journey through Central Asia and China were compiled into a tome called Il Milione, or The Travels of Marco Polo.
As the Year of the Tiger makes its entry in a couple of week’s time, you will begin to feel the positive vibes of a winning year.
It’s in the Tiger’s character to be the best it can be and prevail in whatever it pursues. The Tiger years have always brought and will continue to bring winning moments, so let’s look forward to a winning year with the golden elixir that is Tiger Beer.
