Not ready to wed yet
IT was very sad to read about young teens being married off (Girls, not brides; Woman; Oct 11). Sometimes it is the men who pay off parents so as to marry their juvenile daughters, who are then used as sex slaves or a free maid service to take care of their first wife’s children.
Like the case of Khatijah, in the story. I really sympathise with the 15-year-old for what her parents did to her.
The teenage years are meant for getting to know more about life and enjoying it, before marriage, a long-term commitment.
Child marriages are the cause of an alarming number of divorce cases today. Within a few years, when the women have given birth to a few children, their husbands would dump them for another woman. These women become single mothers and often, their children go astray and fall prey to bad influences.
I totally agree with Suriani Kempe of Sisters in Islam: we have to wait till 17 to drive and 21, to vote. “So how can girls get married, have sex and bear children at 16?”
I hope the authorities will amend the laws and not let young teens become the victims of men and selfish parents.
