Vodka Espresso
Vodka: Skyy
SUPPOSEDLY created in 1984 by famous bartender Dick Bradsell for a well-known model who came to Fred’s Bar in Soho, London, and ordered a drink that would “wake me up, and then f*** me up”, this drink was made using a shot of pure espresso, Skyy vodka and Illyquore coffee liqueur. The lighter, less flavourful Skyy vodka went perfectly with the caffeine jolt from the rich, coffee smoothness of the espresso and the Illyquore.
“I use Skyy in the vodka espresso because I know that ultimately the coffee flavours will take over the drink. By law, American vodka cannot have any taste or smell – that’s why most of their vodkas are very clean,” Ng said.
“And since coffee is already very heavily flavoured, I don’t want to use an overly spicy vodka, which will create a finish that is too heavy.”
Another classic coffee + vodka drink is the Black Russian, which is made with vodka, coffee liqueur and a shot of cream liqueur such as Bailey’s Irish Cream layered on top.
