Classic is cool

THE dude & the duchess’ Fall Winter 2012/13 pays tribute to classic style through earthy ensembles, with sharp cuts and sheer fabrics playing a dominant role.

Inspired by The Great Gatsby, the collection – called The Other Side Of Paradise – is complemented by asymmetric silhouettes and exquisite detailing.

The story behind the collection tells of the gathering of aristocrats, where jazz musicians, artists, literary authors, blue bloods and other creative and intellectual minds engage in social, literary or political discourse amidst a setting of lush velvet sofas and chintz curtains. The dude, with slicked-back hair, is dapper in his black shirt and contrasting button-down cuffs while the duchess looks resplendent in a pleated chiffon dress and a long pearl necklace.

Celebrating timeless styles eminent in the Roaring 20s, simple yet elegant patterns and fabrics take centrestage with materials dictating each silhouette. Pleat details are found in shirts, skirts and tops while prints make a bold statement through stripes, optical illusions and outlined forms. Sheer fabrics like chiffon, georgette and jersey add a delicate touch to womenswear with soft, flowing, draping qualities while cotton and twill make the men look dapper, manifesting in shirts that are sharp with subtle yet definitive details.

This season, colours stay muted via fabrics that mimic the skin with a Stone Age palette of earthy hues of olive, tan, dusty pink and plum juxtaposed with rich tones of cinnamon, golden honey and mocha. Saturated primary hues create a strong impact while black and taupe duos emerge as perennial favourites.

Pieces in the collection are priced between RM129 and RM299.
