Estee Lauder's treat for the tired eye
By SANDRA LOW
THE first thing that gives away how tired you feel is the way your eyes look. With the right under-eye concealer and powder, we may be able to cheat a little and get away without looking like an old hag.
But, generally, unless you are a perky 16-year-old, most women (and some men) have concerns about the skin around their eyes.
There are numerous eye creams in the market which promise to battle all your eye problems, but rarely are these promises met to your satisfaction.
At Estee Lauder Research, a new research leveraging its understanding of the profoundly damaging effects of pollution, specifically ozone on our skin’s DNA and ageing, has been unveiled.
Inspired by these findings, the brand introduces its first ever eye repair serum, the Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Infusion.
Claimed to be a super-potent, fast penetrating repair serum with all the repair benefits of Advanced Night Repair, the product is made specifically for the delicate eye area in a new lightweight and refreshing texture.
According to Dr Nadine Pernodet, executive director of Skin Biology, Research and Development of The Estee Lauder Companies, ozone is formed by reactions to nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight. Organic compounds are emitted due to human activities such as motor vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, gasoline vapors and chemical solvents. Hot weather and sunlight accelerate this formation process, lending ozone the nickname of a “summer time air pollutant”.
In the press release, Dr Pernodet further said that ozone is everywhere in varying levels across the globe. While ozone helps protect us from the sun’s harmful UV rays when in the stratosphere, on the ground level, it can reach toxic concentrations and be harmful to skin.
Typically, heavy industrial or urban areas have higher ground-level ozone compared with rural areas, though winds can carry ozone pollutants hundreds of miles away from its original source.
“Ozone has a profound negative effect on our skin and can increase free radicals, DNA damage and inflammation. This can lead to visible signs of premature ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, dark circles, dryness and uneven skin tone,” she said.
Research by the brand pioneered an Eye Physiology Study which found that the thinness of the eye area skin makes it five times more porous than skin on the rest of the face (this was the result from a two-hour in-vitro testing).
Carried out in an Ozone Chamber developed for The Estee Lauder Companies, the lab used a testing methodology designed to simulate ozone levels in urban environments where ozone pollution is most prominent.
After 20 minutes of high ozone exposure – equivalent to a walk outside in many major cities in the world – they discovered DNA damage increased by 272%!
With the skin around the eye area at 40% thinner than skin on the rest of the face, it allows many everyday assaults, such as ozone, to easily pass through.
So, what does the Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Infusion do? Estee Lauder claims that it helps significantly to inhibit damage after exposure to high levels of ozone.
A reduction of key ageing signs, including fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, dark circles, dryness and uneven skin tone, is said to be visibly apparent.
This lightweight serum contains three high-performance technologies: an Anti-Pollution technology that repairs the appearance of damage; Exclusive Chronolux technology that helps support the natural synchronisation of skin repair; and prevention and hydration whereby a high concentration of soothing anti-irritants, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid protects and repairs the delicate eye area.
This serum, which holds over 20 patents, is said to be intensely hydrating and helpful in keeping the entire eye area looking radiant, rested and smooth.
It can be used as a stand-alone eye product, or layered with an Estee Lauder eye cream for additional targeted benefits.
Price: RM230 (15ml). Available at Estee Lauder counters nationwide.
