MARCH 31: Put on your running shoes and do your bit for charity. Register for the first Makna Founder’s Run 2013 with the tagline Run the Miles, Fund the Smiles.

Some 5,000 runners of different ages and athletic capabilities are expected to participate in this inagural run at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur. There will be a total of seven different categories.

The distances are 7km, 12km as well as a 3km Fun Run, which encourages participants to dress up in their wackiest ensemble. The three best-dressed participants will walk away with hampers.

A total of RM14,000 in cash prizes and two return tickets to any ASEAN destination by AirAsia is up for grabs. Register early online to enjoy early bird discounts.

JAN 26: Don’t know whether or not you’re at risk of diabetes? Pantai Hospital Cheras is offering free diabetic counselling sessions for the public. All sessions will be conducted by an experienced counsellor assisted by staff nurses who will do the screening. Time: 8.30am-1pm.

JAN 28: Watch eight talented teams compete in this drumming final.

The teams are judged on their technique, arrangement and creativity.

The eight finalists are SJK (C) Serdang Baru 1, Pin Hwa High School 24 Seasons Drums, Chung Hwa High School Seremban 24 Festive Drum Team, Chong Hwa High School 24 Festive Chinese Drum Team Alumni, PCCO KL, Cempaka Beat, KL, Hernykx, KL and Five Persons, KL.

The champion will walk away with RM3,000 in cash and a trophy. Time: 4pm. Free admission.

JAN 27: Pertubuhan Generasi Cergas Malaysia (PGCM) is organising its inaugural Charity Food Fest to bring the community together through great food. The fest will gather 40 teenagers to promote and sell food and beverages to raise funds to provide financial education to 600 underprivileged students in Subang. Time: 9am–2pm. Admission is free.

JAN 31: India’s legendary Carnatic vocalist and leading playback singer K.J. Yesudas will be in town to conduct a one-day vocal workshop which will also feature several key speakers.

The speakers will present the various aspects of Carnatic music, including the theoretical components of South Indian classical music: raga (melody) and talam (rhythm).

Since Carnatic music heavily utilises vocals, the workshop will focus mainly on developing the singer’s vocal techniques and style, along with foundational exercises for vocal practice.

Open to all music teachers, lecturers and Carnatic music students with at least one year’s experience.

Participants must submit a resume and/or description of their Carnatic music experience along with full name and profile. Deadline: Jan 27. Time: 9am-4pm.

JAN 26 & 27: The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) pays tribute to the glory of English music by performing masterpieces by six composers from the 20th century.

The concerts will open with Arnold’s Sussex Overture, followed by Vaughan-Williams’ Tuba Concerto in F minor.

The work employs its entire range and demands a large degree of virtuosity from the soloist. To perform this piece, the MPO, under conductor Kevin Fields, will feature tuba player Brett Stemple.

Also in the repertoire are Bax’s evocative Tintagel, followed by Bridge’s romantic The Sea, a colourful work with alternate tender and stormy movements, Talbot’s Chaconne After Purcell and Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Showtime: 8.30pm on Jan 26 and 3pm on Jan 27.
