Who played it?
N. RAMA Lohan’s article last week (He Who Is Townshend in Star2, Jan 20) on Pete Townshend’s autobiography Who Am I? was a good review! Actually, I believe, Townshend played the solo on I Can’t Explain (because Townshend had the Rickenbacker guitar to get the sound they wanted) and Jimmy Page played rhythm guitar. Page played lead on the B-side Bald Headed Woman.

Editor’s note: There are several debates online as to who actually played the solo. The autobiography mentions that Page, a session musician at the time, was brought in to play guitar on the track as producer Shel Talmy wasn’t quite sure if Townshend could handle it. It does not expressedly say who actually played the solo. Wikipedia states that in a May 1974 interview with Creem magazine, Page claimed to have played rhythm guitar on the song. So you may be right, after all!
