In Jan: Thelonious Funksters, a funk band dedicated to playing original music is back to perform at Alexis. These fine, experienced Kuala Lumpur musicians are at home with any genre of music, but during these special weekend nights at Alexis, their primary goal is to groove on funky beats until they see their audience’s feet tapping and bodies shaking in their seats. Jan 12: Three workshops, and one concert featuring singer-singwriter artists Minz, Jesllin, Kevin Lai, Az Samad, Ian Tee, Zin Chin, Julio, Kok, Keith, Reza Salleh, Nick Davis, Yise, and Isabell Pua. The first two workshops are on how to record, produce and sell your own music, one each in Mandarin and English respectively, and the third on how to be in control as a singer-songwriter, and promote yourself. Raising The Bar Festival 2013 is all about championing independent hip hop in Malaysia. Organised by Raising The Bar and presented by Homegrown Productions, the festival brings together not only the ever-growing local hip hop community together but also festival-savvy and music fans alike. Besides live performances and DJ sets, there will also be a mini streetwear bazaar showcasing some of Malaysia’s up-and-coming streetwear labels, hip hop talks/workshops, community collaborations and a hip hop archive exhibit. Tickets are RM48 (pre sale) and RM68 (door sale). Time: 12pm-12am.

Jan 1 to 31: The MIA Department of Extra-Mural Studies is offering a new Chinese Art Class starting January 2013. This class comprises Chinese Ink Painting and Calligraphy and allows the participants to master two different skills at the same time. The class will be conducted once a week, four times a month on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at MIA Art Centre located on Jalan Ampang (near KLCC). This class is suitable for senior citizens, adults and children aged 10 and above. The class duration is two hours per session and the monthly tuition fee is RM160 per month.
