Wondrous wetlands in Malaysia
By TAN CHENG LI
Malaysia has quite a number of wetlands that are well worth a visit.
TODAY is World Wetlands Day, a time to recognise the importance of these habitats and learn about their values and benefits to humanity.
Wetlands encompasses bogs, marshes, peat swamps, freshwater swamps, lakes, mangroves and river systems.
These habitats are crucial, for not only do they harbour myriad species, they provide numerous ecological services such as water storage and purification, carbon storage, flood control, storm protection and fish breeding grounds.
Many wetlands are excellent recreation sites as there are loads to see and experience – from the rich wildlife and the local culture of coastal and indigenous villages, to scenic views and tasty seafood.
