New Doha airport
Qatar’s new international airport is scheduled to open on April 1. QATAR’S new air travelhub, Hamad International Airport, will be able to welcome 28 million travellers a year when it opens April 1. By 2015, about 50 million passengers will be able to transit through the Doha airport on an annual basis.
During the first phase of its opening, 12 international carriers will operate within the brand new complex. The emirate’s national company, Qatar Airways, will move its operations to the new airport in stages, completely settling in by the second half of 2013.
Qatar’s current international airport will continue to operate through fall in order to give all airlines time to move to the new site.
The opening of this new airport will allow the Qatari state to prepare for many sporting events scheduled over the next decade such as the World Handball Championships in 2015 and the World Cup in 2022. Qatar has also made a bid to host the Olympics in 2020. – AFP
