Job fair for the disabled
GOOD news for jobseekers with disabilities as the Beautiful Gate Foundation will be having a ‘OKU Job Fair’ at Jaya 33 Cybercentre, Tower 1, 2 and 3 in Petaling Jaya, on Feb 27, from 11am-5pm.
Companies, including Shangri-La, Elid Sdn Bhd and Pizza Hut, will be setting up booths to recruit disabled workers.
“We hope to see more disabled people come for interviews or just to gather related information. More companies are participating in our job fair by taking up free booths and offering job opportunities for disabled,” said Beautiful Gate Foundation executive director Pastor Sia Siew Chin.
“Currently, the employment rate of the disabled is about 5% in general, whereas 96% are able-body employees. There is a need to increase employment rate for people with disabilities to enable them to be financially independent and live with dignity in the community,” she added.
Many companies feel reluctant to employ the disabled due to lack of knowledge in dealing with them.
To address this problem, there will be job coaching services during the fair.
The job coach is a Social Welfare Department and Jica project which takes initiatives and new approaches in the development of the disabled.
Job coach plays the role of bridge or intermediary to connect the disabled and their employers by providing support for both throughout the process of employment.
“Some describe the job coach as a temporary ‘interpreter’ to connect the disabled who cannot ‘communicate’ well,” said Beautiful Gate Foundation job placement officer Ivy Pua.
This job fair serves as a platform for people with disabilities who are keen to contribute to the workforce and for corporate organisations who want to expand the diversity of their workplace.
