Bus drivers lodge police reports

SIX Rapid Penang bus drivers have lodged police reports against two private bus companies whose drivers have threatened them with bodily harm.

Rapid Penang bus driver Kamarulzaman Omar, 34, said one of the drivers challenged him to a fight after blocking his vehicle in Gelugor on Dec 3.

“He made it look like he was going to crash into my bus but luckily, I managed to avoid him.

“While I was at the Batu Uban traffic lights, he asked me to meet him in Bukit Gedong for a fight. I ignored him and he began uttering vulgar words.

“I almost lost my temper but luckily, a colleague who was in the bus, managed to cool me down,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Kamarulzaman said the same thing happened the next day. Fearing for his safety, he lodged a report at a nearby police station.

Another driver Wan Lokman Nol Hakim, 33, lodged a report at the Bandar Baru Air Itam police station after being threatened on Sept 8.

“Two weeks earlier, I overheard another bus company driver saying he planned to splash acid on one of my colleagues.

“I feel scared for myself and my colleagues. We have not done anything wrong but are only doing our job so that we are able to support our families,” he said.

Rapid Penang corporate communications assistant manager Yap Lee Ying said the situation seemed to be getting worse as the drivers were threatened each day.

“We had a meeting with state Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan on Monday and he promised to do something.

“We want the authorities to act fast and not wait for someone to get injured. Our drivers have been instructed to make police reports if they are threatened.

“The police, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) and state Road Transport Department have also been informed about the matter,” she said.

A police spokesman said they were investigating the reports, adding that the private companies’ bus drivers should stop their threats immediately or face the consequences.
