Port Klang beckons
Text by RENITA CHE WAN
There is a lot more to Port Klang than just port activities.

A second home to ‘yachties’ from all over the country, the Royal Selangor Yacht Club stands proudly today, with a typically Malaysian profile as well as a nautical theme with its cascading roof reminiscent of a sail, which shouldn’t surprise anyone as the club is, after all, a sanctuary for lovers of the sea.
Muara Ikan Bakar
This seafood heaven is located at Tanjung Harapan, formerly known as the Esplanade. It is close to North Port and about 15 minutes’ drive from Shah Alam. You will find a number of popular restaurants specialising in the ocean’s harvest here.
|
Seafood
Most locals head out to the Bagan Hailam area for good and relatively cheap (for the Klang Valley standard) seafood. Restaurants line the road and most are built on stilts over water. Other areas famous for seafood include Pandamaran and Teluk Gong, both south of Port Klang.
|
Over the last decade, Westports Malaysia has grown by leaps and bounds to become one of the leading ports in the region. It promotes itself as a garden port where it attracts visitors and newlyweds to have their photographs taken in the beautifully landscaped port vicinity.
|
Tanjung Harapan is known for its fishing activities. There are some packages, including meals and accommodation, that you can opt for once you get here. The view here is breathtaking and is a favourite spot for family and couples.
Port Klang Golf Resort
The seaside course is located near North Port. Tall trees and lakes add beauty to its generally flat fairways, with ponds, bunkers and sea breezes providing a challenge.

Pulau Ketam
Pulau Ketam is a mangrove-covered island off the coast of Port Klang. The entire village on the island is built on stilts, making it an interesting place for a day trip. Take a ferry from the Pulau Ketam jetty beside (and not inside) the Passenger Cruise Terminal. The mangrove swamps island can be reached by boat.
|
This floating fish farm in Pulau Ketam is about 10 minutes by boat from the main jetty in Pulau Ketam. Most of the live fish are exported to Hong Kong. Some of them are transported to other fish farms or restaurants. It is fun being on the floating farm and feeding the fish. Chalets are available. You can stay at the fish farm for a night. The island is famous for its dried prawns and other fish products.
Pulau Indah
An hour’s drive from Port Klang is Pulau Indah, where visitors can enjoy the rustic and laid-back charms of kampung life, set amidst lush greenery and the Straits of Malacca.

Pulau Carey
Across the sea from Port Klang, is Pulau Carey (Carey Island). Comprised largely of oil palm estates owned by Golden Hope Plantation, the island is also home to the Mah Meri, an aboriginal tribe whose people are known for their traditional woodcarvings, depicting their ancestral spirits or ‘moyang’. The Mah Meri people have kept the legends of their ancestors alive through these figurines and stories told to any willing listeners. Visitors wishing to tour the vast oil palm estates on the island must obtain prior permission from the relevant authorities.
