A grand Christmas Lantern lighting ceremony was held recently to welcome the Christmas month with Bukit Tengah assemblyman Ng Siew Lai, who is also the festival’s organising chairman, invited to launch the event.
Also present were the creator of Hello Kitty, Sanrio Co Ltd, Japan vice-president Kunihiko Tsuji and his wife Yuko Tsuji. The couple were accompanied by Sanrio Wave Hong Kong Co Ltd deputy general manager Caroline Tsang.
The couple were received by Auto-City managing director Gary Teoh, Penang Tourism Action Council (PTAC) general manager Chin Yin Fat and PTAC event manager Ashwin Gu-nasekeran.
Kunihiko said he was happy to see the colourful lighted displays at the lantern festival which carries the theme Hello Kitty & Friends in Penang Safari.
The festival had attracted more than 200,000 visitors since it began on Sept 15.
The lantern display is grouped under seven sub-sectors – the Penang Bridge with Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel, Hello Kitty and Friends, Animals at the Water Front, The Wild, Hello Kitty at Elephant Rides, Land of Dinosaurs and Hello Kitty Walkway.
The lanterns and programmes were changed to suit the different occasions such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali and Christmas.
