Free wiFi at 34 spots
By NG SU-ANN
FREE WiFi is now available at 34 new locations in Penang, including restaurants and nasi kandar outlets.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said this was in line with Penang’s aim to become a fully connected state in terms of wireless and wired connectivity by 2010.
“The 34 hotspots are under the first phase of our three-phase plan to cover more than 120 locations when it is completed.
“They do not include existing WiFi services offered by commercial outlets. Our aim is to fill up the gap by covering places which do not offer WiFi,” he said after flagging off the Penang WiFi Treasure Hunt in the Esplanade yesterday.

It costs between RM300 and RM400 to establish a WiFi hotspot.
The list of the locations is available in http://www.mybroadband. gov.my/location.php.
The operators are Telekom Malaysia Bhd, Optical Communications Engineering (Penang Fon), eB Technologies and Jaring Communications Sdn Bhd.
There were 50 cars in the trea-sure hunt which was the country’s first of its kind to link with WiFi.
The treasure hunt was held in conjunction with the broadband project’s soft launch.
Participants had to download their e-tulips via WiFi at each checkpoint.
