Stamps showcase Malaysia’s floral heritage
By JADE CHAN
IN conjunction with World Postal Day 2008, Pos Malaysia Bhd is issuing a collection of stamps and first day covers featuring some of Malaysia’s unique flowers tomorrow.
The collection is an attempt to increase awareness of such flowers that are unusual because of their special shapes or rare fragrances and to popularise Malaysian flowers.
Popular theme: Yasmin showing the 30 sen (left) and 50 sen stamp sheets for the Unique Flowers series. The Unique Flower series is Pos Malaysia’s 11th issue for this year.
“Our flower-themed stamps are popular among collectors. We’re also using the spot varnish printing technique for the first time on the miniature sheets, which has a glossier effect,” Stamp and Philately Unit head Yasmin Ramli said.
The stamp designs feature four flowers €” kembang songsang (climbing lily), kenerak, akar dani (rangoon creeper) and cempaka pisang (banana shrub), while the miniature sheet features the bakawali (gooseneck cactus).
According to Yasmin, these flowers are used for various purposes like potpourri, to bring good luck, for healing properties and as decorative items.
The stamps, measuring 35mm x 35mm in size, are available in setenant pairs in 30 sen and 50 sen denominations.
Other philately products include minature sheets (priced at RM5 each), first day covers (30 sen each), presentation packs (RM4 each) and folders that are specially designed to display all the items (RM5.50 each).
The Unique Flowers philately products will be sold from tomorrow at the Stamp and Philately Unit, Pos Malaysia Headquarters, all post offices nationwide and online via www.posonline.com.my.
The first day cover is only available on Oct 9.
“To commemorate World Postal Day 2008, we’ll be giving away unique prizes for purchases of any Unique Flowers philately products, or more than RM50 worth of other series at the Stamp and Philately Unit,” Yasmin said.
“We’ve also lined up activities like jigsaw puzzle and stamp design competitions at our unit. Several post offices nationwide have also organised their own programmes.”
She added that from Oct 10 to Oct 31, an exhibition based on the Treasures of the Nation’s Visual Arts series will be held at Starhill Gallery’s foyer. Old stocks of philately products will also be sold at the exhibition.
