Plucky lass needs funds for radiosurgery

YVONNE Foong, the plucky 22-year-old who won the 2005 Dream Malaysia Most Outstanding Youth of the Year award and author of I’m Not Sick, Just A Bit Unwell, is in need of funds for urgent radiosurgery.
She was diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF II) six years ago and has undergone surgery several times since.
During a recent surgical procedure, her doctor found her right optic nerve tumour inoperable as it would make her blind.
“Since I’m deaf and my left eye is underdeveloped, the remaining sight in my right eye must be preserved. I will need radiosurgery to stop this tumour from growing further as soon as possible, but not before two months from now.
“The surgery is very urgent because the optic pathway containing the optic nerve is very narrow. Any slight growth adds pressure to the optic nerve, resulting in decreased vision,” she explained in an email addressed to Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh’s assistant Timothy Ho.
Getting the message across: Yeoh communicating with Foong using a marker and whiteboard. At a press conference in her office to highlight the issue, Yeoh presented Foong with a cheque for RM2,500 and communicated with her using a whiteboard and marker.
Foong is still deciding on which form of radiosurgery to go for as there are a few options available.
She is also having a clearance sale from home to dispose of her old Heart4Hope design T-shirts and is currently producing a new design, which will be ready in two to three weeks.

No takers: The USJ Rotary Club has donated eight sets of crutches for the needy but no one has applied for them. For more information, call Foong’s mother, Mrs Foong, at 016-356 8579 or visit her website www.yvonnefoong.com.
On another note, Yeoh said that there were eight sets of crutches available for those who required them but could not afford them.
“The crutches were donated by the USJ Rotary Club in November but till now, no one has come forward to apply for them.”
