Ushering in 2009


If you have not planned anything for New Year’s Eve, check out the following party spots.

1. Genting Highlands Resort, Pahang

This highland theme park and resort will definitely be on the cards of many who plan to spend the last of the holidays with their family. There’s also a resplendent display of fireworks and concert to look forward to.

2. Danga Bay, Johor

Locals make a beeline for this beach side spot to usher in the new year as they enjoy the cool evening breeze, dine al fresco while a planned concert takes place.

3. Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur

The perennial spot to usher in the New Year, it is always graced by the Prime Minister and his Cabinet. Enjoy a concert with the top stars as you wait out the hours before the midnight chime sounds.

4. Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

Head to Jalan Telawi 3 to enjoy the New Year countdown with the masses who’ll gather from all the food outlets and pubs in the vici­nity to usher in the New Year.

5. Dataran Shah Alam, Selangor

This place is always busy on weekend nights and on New Year’s Eve, most will head here to join friends, make new friends and celebrate together.

6. Putrajaya

The new administration centre comes alive on this night as a spectacular fireworks display marks the dawn of the new year and people revel in the beauty of this place with all its bridges and buildings lit up for the occasion.

7. Esplanade, Georgetown, Penang

Nothing beats sitting out on the esplanade with family and friends while waiting for the Old Year to phase out and the New Year to slip in at midnight.

8. KLCC Public Park, Kuala Lumpur

No where in Malaysia will you find more ­people dressed to the nines at a park and marking their spots with their mats as 4pm. The practice involves ­people taking turns to shop or buying their meals while their friends occupy the designated spot while waiting for the concerts to begin and the fireworks to light up the night.

9. Along Star Hill and Lot 10, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur

The Golden Mile belongs to the crowd on this day and as early as 6.30pm, the roads will be closed to facilitate the gathering of people here.

10. Tanjung Aru Beach, KK, Sabah

Beaches are very popular ­venues for Sabahans during their annual ritual of cleansing as a way to welcome in the New Year. It is a local belief that a midnight bath will rid oneself of bad luck.
