Mohd Ali gives proof

MALACCA: The 143 property owners along Malacca River, whose buildings were earmarked for acquisition, can breathe easily following the state’s decision to officially call it off.

Though Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam gave a verbal assurance that the acquisition had been cancelled during a dialogue with property owners, many wanted proof in black and white.

Mohd Ali settled the issue when he met representatives of the affected properties at the 17th century Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the oldest temple in the region, to present the proof on Monday.

“I hope they are happy with the decision and consider it closed,” he said when presenting the gazetted decision to the representatives.

Owners of the 143 shophouses and houses located in Lorong Hang Jebat, Jalan Kampung Pantai and Jalan Kampung Hulu had a shock last month when they received notices of acquisition on Jan 17.

On Feb 19, Mohd Ali met the residents at Malacca Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry to announce that the state was calling off the acquisition.

Though welcoming the news, several residents said they would be assured only when the state gazetted the decision.

Malacca Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry honorary secretary Goh Siong Kee said he was happy to receive an official letter dismissing the resident’s fears.

“Now we have a black and white copy saying nothing would happen to our homes and businesses. I am happy to convey the message to residents who could not make if for this joyous occasion,” he said.
