Help reach out to drug addicts, NGOs urged
BY GLADYS TAY
JOHOR BARU: Social problems such as drug addiction can be solved with the cooperation of government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
MCA candidate for the Stulang state seat Mok Chek Hou said that such collaboration was needed for a more effective approach.
“There are many drug addicts that need help and the NGOs play an important role in reaching out to them,” he said.

Mok was talking after launching a drug rehabilitation and treatment exhibition at a shopping complex here recently.
He said that the main target of the programme was to reach out to the Chinese community, as they were not widely exposed to such facts.
National Drug Agency officer W.M. Asok Kumar said that a report from the Internal Security Ministry showed a decline in the number of drug abusers nationwide.
“There figures went down from 22,811 to 14,489 nationwide and that itself is a success story on how helpful the treatment centres are,” he said adding that there were 18 centres nationwide under the National Anti-Drugs Agency.
Asok added that the centre in Johor Baru, which is located at Jalan Yahya Awal is providing rehabilitation services daily from 8am to 11pm.
