Sabah government adamant against construction of plant
By RUBEN SARIO
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is standing firm in its decision against the construction of a coal-fired plant at Silam in the east coast Lahad Datu district, Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said.
He said the state made the decision to ensure that pristine nature of nearby conservation areas such as the Danum Valley Maliau Basin and the Darvel Bay were preserved.
Musa however said the state would be willing to consider if Tenaga Nasional Bhd through its local subsidiary Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) wanted to relocate the proposed RM1.3bil plant to Sandakan or Tawau.
“If they forward the proposal we can look at it. We will get feedback from relevant authorities such as the Department of Environment, Forestry as well as Land and Survey,” he told reporters outside the Sabah State Assembly here.
Recently, SESB chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie said a coal–fired plant was the only viable alternative for the state’s east coast where there was already a 30mW power supply shortfall.
