THE Underwater World Langkawi (UWL) tunnel tank will reopen to the public next month and visitors can expect a unique and surreal "underwater experience".

It will be as though they are walking on the ocean bed.

UWL marketing and communications executive Siti Raudhah Shaari said the tunnel was closed in November last year for refurbishment works.

She said the official reopening ceremony would be held on June 21 when UWL would present those in the travel industry with awards in recognition of their contributions and support.

She said the event would be graced by Kedah Mentri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak and that the original tunnel design had been improvised to provide visitors with the surreal feeling as they passed through.

The Sea Nettle Jellyfish, which is the latest addition to the UWL.

The new attraction would be the sea nettle jellyfish with its signature long tail. More sea creatures such as zebra sharks, black tip sharks, white tip sharks, giant grouper, trevallies and sea turtles will be on display.

Currently, she added, some of the bigger fishes like the sharks and stingray were being housed in hexagon tanks.

Rockhopper Penguins

“These creatures will be moved to the tunnel tank because it is bigger. Visitors can also try spotting our two Rockhopper Penguin chicks which hatched in September last year and are doing well as well as 19 adult penguins.

“Also, keep a look out for the African Penguin chick which hatched early this year. It is the one without a black stripe across its chest,” she said, adding that since March 2006, 18 penguin chicks were successfully hatched at UWL.
