Tesco opens 21st outlet in Kedah
TESCO Stores hypermarket chain has opened its 21st outlet in Mergong, about 5km from Alor Star.
Tesco Stores chief executive officer Chris Bush performed the opening ceremony at the outlet’s entrance on Thursday.
The ceremony was watched by hundreds of early customers who made a beeline to the store.
Tesco Stores (M) Sdn Bhd corporate and legal affairs director Azlam Shah Alias said the outlet brought a new shopping experience to the city folk and those living in the surrounding areas.
“We located the hypermarket away from the city centre to cater to the convenience of customers in the north of the city.
“We have also studied the population growth in time to come, future expansion of the city and the deve-lopment of the area as a whole.
“These were the major factors that led us to invest RM80 million for the store,” he said.
He said the hypermarket had 959 parking lots for cars, 150 drive-in car parks for disabled customers and 300 motorcycle parking lots.
He added more than 70,000 products were available at the hyper-market.
Among the early shoppers was a family of five from Guar Chempedak.
Mohd Nazri Zainal, 28, a carpenter, his wife Wan Jamilah Azmi, 24, his sister-in-law Nor Fatihah Azmi, mother-in-law Salmah Haji Said and niece Noriah Saad, four, left their home at 6.30am in order to be among the first to enter the store.
“I heard that the first 300 customers will get a free voucher worth RM200 each and so I wanted to be among the first to get it but I was disappointed to learn that the vou-cher on offer was only for RM10,” Nazri said.
“Anyway since I am already here I want to make the most of it and look around the complex with my family,” he added.
The hypermarket has 507 employees.
