SM Hamid Khan’s team is regional winner

STUDENTS of SMK Hamid Khan from Gelugor, Penang, emerged winners in the ACTology - Petrosains National Science Theatre Competition northern region finals with their informative and humorous play titled King Khan and the Energy Warriors.

The play told the tale of a king who sent his best warriors to look for alternative energy source during an energy crisis. The one who returned with the energy won the princess’ hand in marriage.

“I’m very happy that we’ve won. The students and teachers have been practising really hard, and they’ve always given their best,” said Joseph Wong, principal of SMK Hamid Khan.

Hummorous: SMK Hamid Khan student Yee Sue Ki plays Princess Suki in a scene with the King, servant and a warrior.

According to team member Tan Jinn Wayne, the play was a new experience and not an easy challenge. They had to overcome stage fright and compete against five other teams in the northern region.

SMJK Ave Maria Convent of Ipoh, Perak, also gave an outstanding performance entitled Right Under Your Nose!. The play was about an evil energy trying to take over the world.

The cast was robed in elaborate costumes to complement their brilliant performance.

The character Evilza Devilza (right) gives a stern warning to Wind (left), Hydro (2nd left), Solar (3rd left) and Geothermal (4th left) in SMJK Ave Maria Convent's play.

“We noticed everyone doing the same thing, so we decided to try something different,” said team member Leong Qiao Ying.

The other teams were from SMJK Shing Chung of Sungai Siput, Perak, SMK Raja Perempuan Kelsom of Kuala Kangsar, Perak, SMK Arau of Arau, Perlis and SMK Tunku Abdul Malik of Alor Setar, Kedah.

SMK Hamid Khan will compete against other regional winners in the national finals in Kuala Lumpur in July. The victorious team will receive an educational package to Hong Kong plus various incentives for the school.

Themed Science of Energy: What Does Energy Mean to You?, the competition requires the contestants to act out concepts of energy on stage, combining scientific knowledge with performing arts.
