Fish project to revive Pedu Lake
ALOR STAR: An American-Vietnamese company is investing RM13mil to rear fish in Pedu Lake.
Mentri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak said the firm was interested in rearing patin fish for the American market.
“We welcome the company to invest here. It is in line with our agenda to enhance agriculture produce.
“At the same time it would help revive the Pedu Lake,” he said, noting that the area appeared dead after the two resorts there were shut down in January last year.
The 120ha man-made Pedu Lake was developed as a tourist destination in 1992.
But 15 years later, the Pedu Lake area was pronounced ‘dead’ following the closure of the RM20mil Mutiara Pedu Lake Resort and RM12mil Desa Utara Resort in January last year.
The two resorts by the lake were closed because of poor occupancy rate.
Azizan said the lake was ideal for fish rearing.
He encouraged locals to also participate in fish rearing activities for local and foreign markets.
“We can learn the technique used by the foreign company to rear and freeze the fish,” he said.
The 120ha man-made lake is located close to the Thailand border.
The scenic lake tucked away in the Kuala Nerang district is located about 90km from Alor Star.
