Stay fit the belly dance way
BELLY dancing has been termed exotic, sensual and beautiful and is one of the oldest social dances.
The belly dance benefits both the mind and body. It helps to increase flexibility and strengthens the core muscles, which is the torso.
Apart from the torso, you build leg strength from the movements you make and with the added accessory such as the veil; you will work the arm, shoulder and fingers while you sway.
Flexible: A couple showing their moves. As a form of exercise, belly dancing can surprisingly burn as many calories as jogging, swimming or riding a bike and while doing so, you are having fun with exotic music being played.
Belly dance is known to be less strenuous on the body and definitely more entertaining compared with lifting weights or sitting on a bike.
“We at mYoga focus on the proper techniques of belly dancing such as how to lift and drop the hip, which is a crucial part of the dance.
“Also, there is a proper guide to do undulation, where the belly dancer does a wave-like form of their tummy area.
“Once you master the right techniques, then you can learn how to feel the song and the rhythm of the drum.
“In our belly dance classes, we experiment with Arabic, Egyptian, Lebanese music themes and sometimes just tabla solo beats,” said Alex Chin, the belly dance instructor at mYoga.
